I love listening to podcasts and this is what I learned today, “surround yourself with the things that make you smile.” At first, this thought appealed to me but then I realized, “This is a wrong train of thought. I think we should surround ourself with people who make us smile.” If gaining things is the prerogative we are missing the point because things will not come with us into eternity but people can come with us.
Jesus told us in the book of Matthew that ALL authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Him and that as His disciples we are to go and make disciples of ALL nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Life is not about accumulating things and surrounding ourselves with stuff but it is about surrounding ourselves with community. We are called to teach about Jesus and be more like Jesus so that we can go through this life together and meet again in eternity.
Things cannot go with us into eternity but people can come. Accumulating things puts us in debt and it will one day rust and go to the dump but accumulating community enriches us and gets better with age. I believe it is time to shift our focus. I believe it is time for community!
